Important information about changes to prescriptions for minor conditions

From July 2016, GPs will not routinely prescribe ‘self-care remedies’ that are available over the counter at pharmacies and supermarkets including items for:

  • temperature/fever
  • Coughs, colds, sore throat
  • Hay fever
  • Dry skin
  • Cold sores
  • Allergic rashes, bites and stings
  • Diarrhoea
  • Indigestion/heartburn
  • Headlice
  • and paracetamol for short term use

Ask your pharmacist

Community pharmacist are experts in advising on self-care and on medicines which can be purchased at local pharmacies or obtained free of charge, if eligible.

This policy change is necessary to make the best use of NHS resources, including the time of your GP.
